Understanding Gender through Astrology

Around the wheel — each sign alternates gender-masculine and then feminine, below is a description of the energies they possess both positive and negative. We require the opposite energies for all life to exist. The masculine energy is when we are on the mountain, and the feminine energy is when we are in the cave. We all have both qualities within us. There is a time to be exposed and out in the world and a time to be reclusive, to heal and commune silently.

There is a time to act and even to confront, and a time to retreat from the world around us. We may have a dominant gender, but I have never seen an all masculine, or an all feminine chart. We are both. It is important that both the male and the female energies be respected. We are both because at the time of our birth all the constellations shape us. According to the time and place of birth we can determine the effects of the planets and their particular gender, and house position. Below is a basic description of each sign.

  • Aries — Masculine — mountain

    This is an outward initiation and advancement through persistent confidence, and leadership skills. They have a strong use of language, and are dominant and authoritative in their expressions. They do not censor their speech, and can often insult others. Their sound is a command. At other times they are over whelmed with too many thoughts. They can be reactive and volatile, they do most things with speed , and without much thought of the possible repercussions: This comes from over confidence and arrogance. They can initiate new trends, and can gather people into groups for ideals and causes. They have a sense of color, along with a strong creative instinct, and can excel in art. They are also good in emergencies. They are strong willed and aggressive. A self preoccupation makes them the center of their world. They can be abrupt at times, and may have a disregard for the rights of those around them. They can handle tools, and firearms, and weapons with accuracy and skill. They can also explode and become quite destructive if they do not learn self control. They can find themselves serving in the military, or police force.     An inward dreaming, waking up the senses and the imagination. No boundary or limitation need exist. Rumi would say “they are hazy with smoke”, confusion abounds. Emotional drama and muddied relationships appear often. Many times they are learning how to maintain control over their desires. They are often unrealistic and confused, and can stretch the truth. They pull inward to understand, and also to express sound. A sound that is about song and music, unlike the sound of Aries which is based on command. The sound of Taurus is poetic, dreamlike and healing. Or else it is boasting with exaggerations and well you know — bullshit. They are romantic with wind swept urges. They are sometimes willing to get lost, and to wonder in the mysterious realms of the subconscious. They need to enhance the form, through beauty and fashion. Dressing up and playing a part, because they have a sensitivity to beauty and an attachment to glamour. They can act because they can dissolve into a part they wish to portray.   • Gemini — Masculine — mountain

    This is all about communication, they have a strong need to gather and give information. Their sound is a teaching one. There is an urge to enrich the mind, to be educated and to express knowledge. The gift is not only the ability to think, but the ability to gather knowledge from the intuitive realms. Gemini then becomes a messenger. There is less emotion and more intellect being expressed. Emotions for a Gemini can be troublesome because they have a fine tuned nervous system , and they can detect hurtfulness in language. They can feel intention with sound, so they do get their feelings hurt easily. They are reactive because they rely on their nervous system. They like to glide, so they don't necessarily delve too deeply into any topic for too long. They are about the air waves; and are always tuning in to hear and to listen to whatever may come their way. They are the wind, and need to be free. They also must move.     This is an inward hiding, a need to be nurtured. They have a sense of intimacy, that is expressed on a caring level. Their sound is a cooing, or a silent murmur, soft and gentle. To nurture someone you must be quiet and internal, in order to sense what may be needed. There is a fleeting experience that goes with this sign. As if the sensitivity level is so great as not to be endured. Then one must run like a frightened doe. The ability to feel is so deep, and taken right into the stomach. This is the sign of the Mother, and the womb and the child, all require a sacred space, a lee or a shelter of safety. There is an involvement with the preparation of food, and other things that bring nourishment, and that come from the Earth. There is a connection to time, and seasons, and cycles. Like the stages of gestation between conception and birth. There is an abundance of emotion. All of that emotional energy can get repressed. Anger can then erupt. There is a need to express these emotions. The individual must work hard to acknowledge painful events and then work through them.   • Leo — masculine — mountain

    This is an outward expression, a need to be an individual, to separate from the home or group. A sense of adventure and drama are all part of Leo. Their sound is a roar, here I am, see me, and hear me. The feeling is elation, and also arrogance based on a desire for exclusivity. It is essential that the self remains intact. To preserve one's integrity and not to dissolve into the masses, but to emerge as a leader. The Leo becomes instrumental to change, because they have the courage to strike out in a new direction. Often leading others either out of danger or into a new way of living. The Leo is life because they dare to act. The Leo loves children and is often childlike in nature. They have a need to be heard and can easily feel choked, and at times can feel rage if not properly vented. Once they put aside their egoist needs they begin to evolve more spiritually, and can move mountains. They are proud and have an exuberance for all life. They need to be loved, and constantly stroked. They work well with children and are eternally young. They can also be very demanding, but when evolved they are very, very generous.   • Virgo — Feminine — cave

    This is an inward retraction- a need to serve, to heal others and to be healed. Their sound is a critical one, based on discernment and the need for perfection. They have a need to be perfect, and that perfection is about performing a task right. In order to avoid serious consequences if the task is not performed right. There is a deep sense of responsibility for others because of their concern to heal and serve. There is a frustration and an impatience that is present. Also speed and dexterity, making them able to maneuver efficiently, which are requirements for Virgo when working. Whenever any of these are lacking you can hear a Virgo complaining. They are fine tuned and tightly wired; nervousness and being fidgety are the results. They do pay attention to detail, and can focus well when working. Highly sensitive to other's opinions of them or their work, even though they can be critical of others.     This is an outward gesture- a need to share, and to relate to others. The sound is a diplomatic one, requiring balance to keep peace. They are adjusting language to a midpoint, that enables one to see both sides of an argument. They often turn the other cheek to avoid confrontation. Love is primary to them, but trust can keep a Libra from loving relationships. They love to be social and can flirt, and can be the life of any party. They can get sidetracked easily, and often forget their important work. This is when a crisis can show up, putting them back on the spiritual path. They have a wrestling energy, sometimes pent up and sometimes being expressed. They can marshal others and can be quite effective in the military. They are creative problem solvers. They are gifted at strategy, to solve problems without harm. Although when pushed can become quite a force to reckon with. They have a sense of humor and can laugh even in the worst of times.     This is an inward seeking- a need to comprehend and unravel the mystery of life. They have the ability to go to the darkest places of the subconscious mind. They have no fear. With intense probing and delving they search. They work under cover, and secluded, often in secrecy. They work with the past, and sometimes they work in areas where most cannot. There is no sound, only silence. If there is sound it is whispering. Or in code. They can give messages with double meanings. They are very analytical. They are cuttingly precise, and can use sharp instruments to cut. They are the surgeons or butchers. They make great therapists. Although they may indulge in therapies of all kinds. They also never forget, the past is always with them. They love that which is ancient, and may often have a desire to trace their ancestry. Moody, sexy, brooding, a dark intensity.   • Sagittarius — Masculine — mountain

    This is an outward expansion- a need to explore, go beyond, and travel the universe. The sound is truth, or a perception of truth, an ideal. This could be beneficial or harmful. If one intends on manipulating others with their doctrines and beliefs. This is the professor who proclaims to have knowledge, and can be quite seductive. Often empowered by this knowledge it can produce delusional types. The urge is to educate, to have a philosophy or a religion to go by. The commandments, the law, and morality are standards prescribed to help us live with respect and tolerance. The right use of language can save humanity; the wrong use of language can be quite destructive, hate groups and prejudice are the abuse of highly select and exclusive ways of thinking. This is the sign that becomes responsible for the right use of language. All to often they can become the victim or perpetrator of malicious gossip and scandal.   • Capricorn — Feminine — cave

    This is an inward discipline- a need to isolate, to be alone, and to walk a different path. The sound is being alone in a forest. The sound of chopping wood, of building and constructing is also part of the Capricorn experience. This is the disciple who sees the world differently, a vision that others are not ready for. The need is to construct a form or a belief. This is the architect in the world. The one who works alone, building , constructing, polishing the surface to see the beauty in the grain of the wood. The one who takes his large hand and feels the smooth surface of a finished work, or even the rough surface of a tree. Long periods of time are spent reflecting. The work can be work with older people. The work of Capricorn is serious and practical, having much responsibility. They are often in Government, or in a self imposed prison. They can be very materialistic and build an empire of wealth, or they can be quite poor but enriched with their ideals and beliefs, having very little in the way of material possessions.   • Aquarius — Masculine — mountain

    There is an outward freedom- a need to detach, to cut away from, to breathe. The sound is an independent one. The Aquarian prefers friendship and group participation. He may avoid intimacy. This is the non-conformist, who has a deep refusal to be manipulated and controlled. Although he is often quite structured and stubborn. This can make him appear controlling at times. There is also an angry king side to the Aquarian personality. This king is quite clever in business. The Aquarian can be instrumental in running a large company. They sometimes are in step with the current pulse of life.They are more about the future than the past.They can work in government positions, or belong to a controversial group. Control issues prevail, destroy to rebuild, taking down the old concepts and institutions and replacing them with a world centric view. A sense of universal brotherhood is the theme for the age of Aquarius, which is upon us now. The sacrifice is non payment for the work rendered. The Aquarian is not intimate, but instead is interactive with the group. Friendship is the quality of this sign. They must purify, by the two rivers-one of love and one of life. They are cleaning stables, or cleaning water. The important work of the Aquarian is to keep flowing and to detach from unhealthy attachments.   • Pisces — Feminine — cave

    This is an inward suffering- a need to sacrifice. The image is of an Asian woman, in a dark and thunderous storm at the edge of an ocean with a large straw hat covering her head, {spiritual protection}, as she steps on the rough stones with sharp edges causing her bare feet to bleed, {the crucifixion}. The need is to bleed in order for the self to die. The sound is prayer and chanting, also the sound of rituals- Even gospel music and that emotionally expressive female voice. The natural sound is of the pounding surf. The giving up and crucifixion of the personality for the ultimate expression of compassion here on earth. This can be highly dramatic, in that there is a victim role here. There can be a distortion of truth, and a perversion that comes from illusion. Pisces is the confused dreamer, the place of the subconscious mind. Attracted to drama and the theatre; either professionally or living a life full of drama that they create. The ultra sensitive soul is always at work, trying to heal someone. There is a desire to escape the harsh conditions of the world around them. At times they can feel imprisoned, by a person or a situation they are bound to. Deeply inward, they suffer profusely, their need is to pray or chant. I AM BECAUSE I HAVE FAITH
